Personal boundary dysfunction develops in childhood when parents or caretakers do not have clear boundaries and therefore model unhealthy behavior. These unhealthy boundaries can cause poor social skills, including sensitivity and bullying, for children, and continue into adulthood. Poor boundaries can lead to shame and addiction, and lose the sense of self. It’s never too late to establish healthy boundaries. Ways to develop healthy boundaries, such as assertiveness and direct communication, are discussed. Self-knowledge and self-esteem will benefit from setting stronger boundaries.
